Rogers Feels Bad for HTC Dream Owners, Free Upgrade In the Works

There isn’t any hiding that Android hasn’t been around a very long time, and for some people, Google’s path to upgrading the devices out there has been a case of speculation and insanity. Flagship devices are left to sit on old software, while new devices like the DROID (and in the most recent case, the Nexus One) are released with the shiny new version of Android. We’ve watched devices like the original G1, or Dream as it’s known around the world, get left in the dust. And while there are options to upgrade through “other means”, most people want the official update, and are willing to wait for it.

Well, the Dream, or G1, isn’t getting the official 2.1 update from Google, due to a lack of on-board memory. While it makes sense from a business stand-point (why provide an update that will not function correctly, or to its full potential?), that leaves a lot of early-adopters to the Android platform asking why, and wanting more. This is where we’d say that Rogers is swooping in for the rescue, because it looks like they are about to offer a free upgrade from the Dream, to the Magic (which goes by the name of the My Touch 3G, here in the States).

The Dream owners out there are probably facing a pretty touch decision, as many people who still own the Dream are keeping it for that physical keyboard. But the idea of missing out permanently on any future upgrades has to be kind of disheartening. Is it enough to make you adopt a new phone entirely? But then again, it will supposedly be free, and that may be too good of an offer to back away from. We’re hoping that T-Mobile USA does something akin to Rogers, because there are a lot of G1 owners out there still, who we’re sure would love to get a taste of 2.1.
