Go ahead and chalk this one up as a win for Netflix, as they’ve now set to land on all three of the major video game consoles available. Both Nintendo and Netflix went ahead with the announcement today, and we’re sure that makes a lot of people around the world very, very happy. It’s been no secret that Netflix on Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has been a hit, and PlayStation 3 owners have been enjoying their experience as well. So now it looks like owners of the Wii will finally be able to jump into the mix.
Unfortunately, neither Nintendo or Netflix were ready to comment on the release date of the service, though they did offer up some juicy details about the way it will all work. Unlike the Xbox 360’s integrated take with Netflix, Wii owners will have to work it like Sony’s user base does, with an Internet streaming disc, that you must have playing to stream your movies over the Wii. Of course, you must also have a subscription to Netflix, which starts at $9.00 a month, but there are no extra charges beyond that.
Unlike Microsoft’s LIVE system, where you must pay for the rights to have a Gold Membership to stream movies via Netflix. What we can’t wait for, is the ability to use our motion controllers to navigate the Netflix menus. Considering the announcement today, we’ll be sure to keep our ears open for any launch details that Nintendo and or Netflix give out in the coming weeks. We’re under the impression that the discs could start shipping out in Spring, but it’s always possible they start sneaking them in sooner than expected.
